Mix It Up Challenge #48 – Fresh Inspiration

The #SugarPeaDesigns Blog has a new mix-it up challenge – Mix It Up Challenge #48 – Fresh Inspiration.

I decided to “mix-it up” and use both the sketch and the photo inspiration.

Card Design Process:

80lb canvas white card stock and mat with foam backing for a more stand out card.

I used my Misti stamper to stamp the sunshines in rainbow colors using Hampton Art mini dye based stampers and a Shine Bright Sentiment in Tuxedo Black.

For my sentiment, I stamped it with my Misti alternating white and sunshine yellow ink and layered a piece of scrap glitter yellow paper on the top for another pop of color. I love the way this card turned out.

Tip: To make my circle of stamps easier to do, I traced the inside of one of my large tape spools with light pencil in the center of my card stock, then I just used the Misti to follow the circle as I stamped. I was able to erase the fine pencil line. This really made the repetitive stamping easy and actually fun to do.

Winter White Card stock with yellow glitter card mat.

Sentiment is embossed on white card stock and hand painted with distress oxide inks in broken china and brushed with antique linen and went over with a Spectrum Noir sparkler pen in crystal clear.

Basics of Card Making Challenges

One of the blog features here at CraftyCardGal.com will be to post listings of current Card Making Challenges.

There are many different types of card challenges to enter. For this initial post, I thought I would share some basic facts about Card Making challenges and how they work.

Types of Challenges:

CAS(e) – Clean and Simple design card challenge.  Your design generally needs to be clean and simple, without multiple layers and the card should have open space.

Sketch – A simple sketch of a card layout that you follow for your design.
Mixed Media – A design that will use multiple media types like stamps and watercolor.
Fusion – Option to design based on a sketch or photo or create fusion by using both.
Color Challenges – Design your card based on a specific color palette.
Photo Challenge – Design a card inspired by a photo.
Specific Product or Brand Challenge – To participate you will need to use a specific brand of stamps, dies, etc or you will need to only use stamps, or all watercolor, etc…
Free for All Challenge – Usually there are very few guidelines at all,..just have fun and create.

*Generally, you just need to follow the rules for each individual challenge and make sure to have the main elements the challenge requires whether its certain colors, a specific product brand of stamps or dies, etc..

Submitting your design: Most sites I have seen use a linking tool called ilinkits. It’s very simple to use. You just enter the required fields to link up your entry. Make sure that you link to your card image and blog post, not your main blog page address.  You also have the option on many challenges to add their challenge image on your post as a way to link back to them.

Prizes and winner selection: Every challenge is different. Some challenges random select the winner through a random generator tool. Other sites actually look through all the submissions and choose a winner. The winner is announced with a link back to their page and on many occasions, there is a prize offered such as a gift card for stamps or dies or other fun products.

My Favorite Blogs for Card Challenges: Here are my top favorite blogs that host frequent card challenges. I would visit each one, browse their sites, read the challenge rules and look at examples of card designs to get an idea of how this all works. It really helped me learn so I could jump right in for the fun.

My First Card Challenge

Hi fellow crafters and card makers! Happy Wednesday.

One of the things I want to start getting involved with is doing CASE challenges and maybe joining a few design teams that fit my card making style.

This is the first card CASE challenge I’ve joined and I am right on the wire with it – it’s due by today. Details below.

(Correction: I had my dates mixed up. I should of had this submitted on September 25th and the winner is announced today. I thought about just deleting this post, but I put effort into the card and love the site that is hosting the challenge, so I decided to roll with it.)

CFC #208 – Use Those Sequins

For this card, I used an older Stamedous 3-flower stamp inked in Ranger distress inks: Salty Ocean and Peacock Feathers. I went over the ink with my Spectrum Noir Glitter Pen in clear.

The die cut is from Crafters Companion welcome bundle. I double layered it to stand out more.

I will add a few more details later today, but thought I better hurry and get this submitted.

Happy Card Making!

CraftyCardGal has finally arrived

Hi, All! The big day is here. I finally have been able to get the CraftyCardGal blog up and running. I am so excited.

Let me share a bit about myself and my hopes for this website but first a BIG thank you for stopping by. I look forward to getting to know my page followers and visitors as time goes on.

I’m Destiny Majeski a.k.a CraftyCardGal. I have been crafting since I can remember, but I’ve only been crafting cards for the past 5 years. It’s a hobby, an addiction and as of the past year or so, I opened an Etsy shop and have been selling my cards in shows and to friends and family.

I am a mother to 2 children – a 23 year old daughter and 6 year old son. You read that correctly – they are a whopping 17 years apart. My son was a precious surprise and has me and the hubby on our toes constantly. He is so much fun.

During the day I am a receptionist/administrative assistant at a nursing home close by. It’s a job I adore. It’s very busy and fast paced and I love interacting with our resident’s. They are amazing folks and it’s such an honor to spend time with them and help them as much as I can . My daughter works works with me as the activities staff and that’s a joy as well. I love to see her compassion and love for those that she works with and it’s fun to be with her everyday.

My husband is a pretty amazing guy if I do say so myself. He is in the home construction business and the boss of his own company. I’m pretty proud of how hard he works and he has woodworking skills that are very impressive. I’ve been fortunate to have his work in my very own craft room in the form of storage solutions. It’s definitely handy having him around:-)

Crafting has been something I get to do in my free time, but as I am aging and reflecting on my life, I decided I really would like this to be my work as well. Of course, if I can succeed I will still visit the nursing home often, but my main focus will be on my family and the new business. I guess we will see how things go. Wish me luck!

Have a great week,
